Interactive Artifact 2023

Exploring this topic of innovative ways art can be accessible for the deaf+blind community and people of all backgrounds and abilities, this sound installation is a commentary on the art of presence. The goal of this piece is for participants to experience different perspectives of the human senses: touch, sight, hearing, and smell. The idea is inspired by practicing the art of inclusion in collaboration with the viewer – this interactive artifact investigates a form of visual storytelling techniques that focuses on interaction elements that offer accessibility to visitors of all backgrounds and abilities.
While people sit in the Installation space there will be sound pieces I created continuously playing –

Viewers are invited to participate with the act of placing one’s wishes and thoughts on pieces of paper and then hanging them on the tree branches that are attached to the art work. While in the space, participants are welcomed to take a gift from the plate in exchange they are asked to leave something to trade. The aim is to move beyond the standard forms of interaction and simulate a calming space in this immersive experience that is meant to be a commentary on physical presence. With the virtual world being an incredibly quickly advancing industry, my goal is to expand on this concept of ‘virtual reality” that is based on theories of the human desire to escape the boundaries of the real world. The sound pieces will be available for viewers to immerse themselves in the space they explore sensory experiences that connect them to the current environment and embody awareness. As they interact directly with the interactive artifact itself, the sound recordings available will add an additional level of sensory engagement to the interpretation of the viewer.

Included in the space is an altar that stimulates the senses of smell & sight, meant to add another layer for the viewer to immerse themselves in the art of presence. Provided in a collection, above hangs a mirror assemblage with a table bellow that has a placement of medicines and symbols representing the four main elements of nature.
